AREA DESCRIPTION — MAMMOTH LAKES, CALIFORNIA

Mammoth Lakes is a lively mountain community surrounded by the Sierra Nevada, alpine lakes and extensive pine forests. It is especially popular with young seasonal workers because the town combines an international resort atmosphere with easy access to skiing, snowboarding, restaurants, shops and social activities.

During the winter, participants can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, sledding and scenic gondola rides. The town’s free shuttle network makes it easier to travel between residential areas, The Village and the resort, although schedules and routes should always be confirmed locally.

Days off can also be used to visit spectacular Eastern Sierra destinations such as Mono Lake, Hot Creek, Convict Lake and the June Lake Loop. Yosemite National Park, Devils Postpile and Rainbow Falls are also important regional attractions, although seasonal road closures can affect winter access. Mammoth is an excellent destination for students seeking outdoor adventure, new friendships and an authentic American mountain-town experience.
